Maybe It’s Not the Child: Dealing with Behaviors We Find Challenging by Looking at Our Programs
When we work with a young child who exhibits what we define as challenging behaviors, we typically blame the child. What if we were to take a closer look at our expectations and our environment? Incidences of challenging behaviors lessen when teachers have appropriate expectations and create learning environments designed around the needs of the child. Let’s look at these factors in our programs. Then we will see how adapting our teaching practices, expectations and environments can help us assist in working with children.
